Are these Alkaline Food Experts for Real?

// April 2nd, 2012 // No Comments » // Cooking Experts, Dairy, Drinking, Fish, Food

Is this alkaline diet thingamajig for real? Heck, I’ve read all about it and got incredibly excited but then after looking around at a few alkaline food charts online, they all seem to have conflicting information. I mean, what’s acid on one charts shoes up as alkaline on another. Then there might be 2 charts that have a certain food in the same column but one will say it’s very alkaline (or acid), and the other will say it’s slightly alkaline (or acid). Then we have the food and cooking experts who are also on different pages. One will say avoid eating dead animals period, including fish, and another will say eat all animal products (including dairy), in moderation because they still have some nutritional benefits despite being classed as acid. The rule of thumb is 1 third acid food to2 thirds alkaline, but once again, no 2 reports giving advice are the same, yet all those who write about this diet claim to be experts.

That’s it, I’m going back on the Atkins diet, sod them all. At least I will be able to keep my weight down and that on its own is a huge benefit to health ;-)

Christmas vacation review

// November 16th, 2011 // No Comments » // Dairy

Over the christmas vacation I was home with both of my children. We had a very nice time together and enjoyed this opportunity to escape our regular, hectic routine and be together as a family.

My husband took the kids outside one sunny afternoon. They built a great snow fort together. They made it by rolling large snowballs and arranging them in a circle. Then they stacked more snowballs upon the first layer created a wall all the way around. The kids had a blast and burned off lots of energy and my husband got to feel like a kid again.

We would have liked to go away on holidays over the christmas vacation, however this plan is on hold for the time being. We did get a chance to spend extra time with friends and family and that was a lot of fun as well.

Another day during the christmas vacation, a friend of the family invited the children on a hike through the woods. We packed up a lunch and bundled the kids up nice and warm and then they were off! Our friend had built a sort of structure to serve as a shelter. It consisted of a six foot bench, with a partial roof, but this was plenty of room for the kids to sit and eat their lunch before heading home from their hike.

We went for dinner at another couple’s home. They cooked a huge dinner and we crowded around the table to enjoy the food and their company. Then we ended up in their son’s bedroom, tearing wallpaper off his bedroom walls, as they are in the middle of renovations. This was an unexpected activity, but was a lot of fun, even if it’s not your typical christmas vacation endeavor. After working away on his room, we all headed outside. Our friends built a huge bonfire and we gathered around, drinking hot chocolate.

My sister came to stay for a week during the christmas vacation as well. She brought along her chihuahua puppy. Our kids were busy with that little dog from morning until night. As a special surprise, my other sister surprised us with tickets for the Gwen Stefani concert. It was a nice way to spend an evening with our visiting sister and a great surprise for all of us.

When the christmas vacation finally ended, the kids were not too eager to go back to school. However, as parents we were pretty tired out and happy to see them off to school until the next vacation comes along some time in March.

Radiation Levels Higher in Milk in California

// April 1st, 2011 // No Comments » // Dairy, Health Concerns, Milk, Radiation

It’s beenĀ 3 weeks now since the earthquake in Japan and the nuclear mess that is still going on. I feel for the people of Japan as they are right up in the action and it must be very difficult for them.

Still, it’s important to realize this is a global issue. Our food is one of the things that has been impacted and while we may not be in great immediate danger – it’s important to be aware that it’s getting worse in other places than just Japan.

They’re downlpalying radiation levels here in California but it is appearing in higher levels in milk and other places too. They never say how MUCH it is
ELEVATED – they just say things like you get more radiation from a
bannana or an xray.

I wish someone would just tell us what is happening exactly and
specifically. I’m not saying we should freak out but radiation is UP
and that just can’t be good.

While I am glad it made the news – I do not like the way they are sugar coating it and trying to downplay the danger now and down the road if that nuclear issue is not solved in Japan.
